The Unthinkable Interruption

The atmosphere inside the Oakridge Funeral Home was thick with grief. Soft organ music drifted through the stark, cream-colored viewing room, lit by harsh overhead fluorescent panels that cast a cold glow over the mourners. David, dressed in a sharp charcoal grey suit, stood near the front, his head bowed in mock sorrow. Inside the polished ivory casket lay Clara, his wealthy mother, supposedly taken by sudden heart failure. But the solemn silence was shattered when the heavy double doors burst open.

Emily, a nurse who had cared for Clara for years, ran down the aisle. She was still wearing her light blue scrubs, but draped over them was a white canvas apron stained with sweat and dirt. In her hands, she gripped a heavy, wooden-handled axe. The mourners gasped, pulling back in terror as Emily marched straight toward the altar. Before anyone could react, she swung the axe with terrifying force, burying the blade deep into the polished ivory lid of the casket.

Wood splinters exploded into the air. "Stop! She's not dead!" Emily screamed, her voice cracking with pure desperation. She wrenched the blade free and delivered another heavy blow, splitting the top wide open.

David rushed toward her, his face twisted in a mix of rage and panic.

"What are you doing? Have you lost your mind? Get away from her!"
he yelled, grabbing Emily's arm. But Emily fought him off, dropping the axe and frantically tearing at the splintered wood with her bare hands, ignoring the sharp shards slicing into her skin.
"I heard her! I was checking the medical charts and realized the dosage was wrong! She's breathing!"
she cried out.

Just as David reached to drag her away, the room fell dead silent. From the dark gap in the splintered lid, a pale, trembling hand reached out, clawing at the air. David froze, his face draining of all color.

"No..."
he whispered. A muffled, raspy voice gasped from inside the casket,
"Help me..."
as the onlookers screamed in sheer horror.
