The Shadow at the Door

The tiles of the guest bathroom were ice-cold against Chloe's bare knees, but she barely felt the physical chill. Inside her chest, her heart was hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm that threatened to choke her. She crouched in the tight corner beside the porcelain tub, her knees pulled tightly to her chest, her hands shaking so violently she could barely lock her fingers together. Tears had tracked clean paths through the dust and light makeup on her cheeks, and her damp hair clung to her neck in cold, wet strands.

On the other side of the heavy white panel door stood Marcus. He wasn't supposed to be here. He was supposed to be miles away, bound by the restraining order Chloe had fought so hard to secure. Yet, his towering silhouette was clearly visible, cast against the frosted glass and white wood by the harsh hallway light. He stood perfectly still, a dark, looming shape that felt entirely suffocating.

"I miss you, Chloe," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying a low, rhythmic cadence that made her skin crawl.

Chloe flinched as if she had been struck. She looked up at the door, her eyes wide and glassy with pure terror. She tried to swallow the lump in her throat, her breath catching in a ragged gasp.

"You were controlling me, Marcus!" she cried out, her voice cracking under the weight of her panic. "You still are!"

The shadow outside shifted slightly, the silhouette tilting its head as if contemplating her words. When he spoke again, his tone was eerie, completely unbothered by her distress.

"Same thing when you love someone," he replied softly.

Before the horror of his words could fully sink in, a heavy, resounding thud shook the door frame. Marcus had slammed his fist against the wood. The impact rattled the hinges and sent a violent vibration through the small bathroom. Chloe let out a sharp, terrified gasp, pressing herself even harder into the corner, praying the lock would hold.
