Previously: When Chloe locked herself in her bathroom to escape her terrifying ex-boyfriend Marcus, she thought she was completely alone—until a hidden home security feature changed everything.

The Breaking Point

The silence that followed the heavy blow was even more terrifying than the noise. Chloe stared at the brass deadbolt, her only shield against a man who had slowly dismantled her life over the past year. She knew the lock was sturdy, but Marcus was desperate, and desperation made him strong. She could hear his heavy breathing through the gap at the bottom of the door.

"I know you have your phone in there, Chloe," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a low, mocking purr. "But I cut the lines outside. And if you're trying to use the Wi-Fi, I took care of that router in the living room before you even came home."

A cold dread washed over her. She was completely isolated. But Marcus didn't know about the independent smart-home security system her brother, an engineer, had set up. It operated on a dedicated cellular backup battery hidden deep within the kitchen pantry. High on the bathroom wall, a small, inconspicuous smart speaker sat silent. It was her only lifeline, but to use it, she would have to speak aloud, alerting Marcus to her plan.

Taking a deep, trembling breath, Chloe looked up at the small black device. She had to risk it. With all the strength she could muster, she whispered the emergency phrase.

"Guardian, red alert."

For a terrifying second, nothing happened. Then, the speaker's LED ring flashed a violent crimson. A loud, synthetic siren began to blare, accompanied by a pre-recorded message broadcasted at maximum volume: "Emergency protocol activated. Authorities have been notified of an active home invasion."

Marcus let out a roar of absolute fury. The doorknob began to rattle violently, followed by the deafening sound of his shoulder slamming against the wood. The top hinge splintered, wood chips raining down onto the blue tiles. Chloe screamed, covering her head as the door began to give way. But just as the frame cracked open, a loud crash echoed from the front of the house, followed by the sound of heavy, running footsteps.
