The Homecoming Nightmare

The heavy mahogany door of the estate swung open, letting in the crisp autumn air. David stepped into the grand foyer, a bright smile on his face. He was returning two days early from his business trip in Chicago, eager to surprise his pregnant wife, Clara. In his left hand, he held a delicate bakery box containing her favorite lemon chiffon cake; in his right, a vibrant bouquet of fresh red roses. The house was quiet, save for the faint sound of weeping.

David’s smile vanished. He hurried toward the living room, the scent of lavender soap and floor wax growing stronger. What he saw stopped him dead in his tracks. Clara, seven months pregnant with their first child, was on her knees. Her auburn hair fell in disheveled strands over her tear-stained face as she frantically scrubbed soapy suds off the polished hardwood floor. Right beside her lay the ruined, smashed remains of a chocolate cake, scattered across the expensive wood.

Before David could speak, a cold, aristocratic voice echoed from the plush sofa. His mother, Beatrice, sat elegantly, a string of pearls gleaming against her silk blouse. She didn't even look up as she took a slow sip of her chamomile tea.

"If she wants to stay in this house, she should learn her place," Beatrice said coldly.

The bouquet of roses slipped from David’s fingers, scattering petals across the floor. The bakery box tumbled beside them. His mother’s casual cruelty hung in the air like a poisonous fog. Clara looked up, her blue eyes red and swollen, her voice cracking with pure exhaustion.

"She's been doing this every day, David... ever since you left for your trip!" Clara sobbed, clutching her pregnant belly.

David’s face contorted in a mixture of disbelief and roaring anger. He stepped forward, his eyes locked on his mother, who merely set her teacup down with a soft, dismissive clink.
