A Sudden Reunion in the Plaza

The autumn wind swept through the towering skyscrapers of the financial district, but Audrey felt nothing but the racing of her own heart. She knelt on the cold, hard stone of the plaza, ignoring the dirt staining her dark emerald blazer. Before her sat Joseph, a man the world had written off as just another forgotten soul. He was disheveled, his face marred by scars and a patchy beard, wearing a frayed grey sweater that barely kept out the chill. Yet, to Audrey, he was the only man she had ever loved.

A crowd of silent onlookers, dressed in sharp black business suits, gathered in a quiet circle. They whispered in hushed tones, judging the wealthy woman kneeling before a homeless man. Audrey didn't care. She held out a blue velvet ring box, her hands trembling as she looked up into his vacant, confused eyes.

"Marry me. Please,"
she pleaded, her voice cracking with emotion.

Joseph stared at her, his mind a foggy maze of forgotten memories.

"Why me?"
he asked, his voice rough and unfamiliar to his own ears. Audrey’s tears spilled over the edges of her elegant sunglasses.
"Because it's you,"
she whispered, her heart breaking for the man who had once been so vibrant.
"Please."

Before Joseph could answer, the screech of tires shattered the silence of the plaza. A heavy black SUV lunged onto the pedestrian walkway, stopping mere feet from them. The doors flew open, and a man yelled,

"Get him, stop!"
Joseph’s eyes fell upon the gold emblem inside the open ring box. A spark of recognition flared in his chest.
"This name..."
he whispered. Instantly, a guard rushed forward, shouting,
"Don't let him remember!"
