I Rescued a Drowning Wolf from the Ice, and Then the Pack Surrounded Me
Liam had lived in the remote Alaskan wilderness for three years, seeking the kind of silence that could numb the ache of losing his wife, Sarah. The rugged landscape was unforgiving, but it was the only place where his grief felt matched by the raw scale of the world. One bitter Tuesday morning, as a thick mist rolled over the frozen lake near his cabin, that silence was shattered by a sound that made his blood run cold. It was a desperate, high-pitched whimper, vibrating with sheer panic.
Following the sound, Liam stepped onto the treacherous, groan-inducing ice. Near the center of the lake, a dark hole yawned in the white expanse. Inside, a silver-furred timber wolf was struggling frantically, her paws slipping against the wet, glassy edges of the ice. She was drowning, her energy rapidly depleting in the sub-zero water. Instinct overtook caution. Liam threw himself onto his stomach, sliding toward the edge as the ice creaked precariously beneath his weight.

"Hang on, girl. Just hang on," Liam muttered, his breath pluming in the freezing air.
He reached down into the freezing water, his fingers instantly going numb as he grabbed the wolf's front paws. She didn't snap or growl; instead, she gripped him with a desperate strength. Liam dug his boots into the slick surface, his muscles screaming under the strain. Close to her wet, terrified face, he yelled with everything he had left:
"Come on, come on, you can do it!"
With a final, explosive heave, Liam threw his weight backward, dragging the heavy wolf out of the abyss. They both slid across the ice, Liam falling flat on his back, gasping for air as his chest heaved. The shivering wolf collapsed beside him. But as Liam closed his eyes in relief, a low rumble echoed through the mist. Looking up, he saw several large, dark silhouettes emerging from the treeline. The pack had arrived, and they were heading straight for him.
