Previously: When Liam pulled a freezing wolf from a cracked ice lake, he thought he was just saving a life. But when the rest of the pack emerged from the mist, his survival instincts kicked in.

The Shadow in the Mist

Liam lay frozen on the ice, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The mist parted to reveal five massive timber wolves, their thick winter coats frosted with rime. At the front of the pack stood a giant black alpha, his golden eyes locked onto Liam with predatory intensity. Liam knew he had no weapon, no shelter, and absolutely no chance of outrunning them on the slick ice. He braced himself for the inevitable attack, closing his eyes as the alpha took a slow, deliberate step forward.

But the silver wolf he had just rescued had other plans. Shivering violently, she dragged herself to her feet and stepped directly between Liam and the alpha. She bared her teeth, letting out a low, warning growl that startled the rest of the pack. The alpha stopped, tilting his head in apparent confusion. The two wolves stared at each other, a silent, tense negotiation unfolding on the frozen lake.

Before the standoff could resolve, a deafening, savage roar shattered the silence. The sound was so powerful it seemed to vibrate through the very ice beneath them. From the dense pine forest, a massive shadow burst into the open. It was a rogue grizzly bear, easily weighing eight hundred pounds, driven into a frenzy by winter hunger. The beast was massive, its eyes bloodshot and wild as it caught the scent of blood and fear on the lake.

The bear charged, its heavy paws cracking the ice with every stride. Liam tried to scramble away, but his wet clothes had frozen solid against the ice, pinning him in place. He was directly in the path of the charging monster. The wolf pack scattered, but the silver wolf stood her ground next to Liam, her ears pinned back. As the giant bear lunged, the silver wolf leaped forward to defend her savior, initiating a chaotic and deadly battle on the crumbling ice.
