I Rescued a Drowning Wolf from the Ice, and Then the Pack Surrounded Me
Previously: When Liam pulled a freezing wolf from a cracked ice lake, he thought he was just saving a life. But when the rest of the pack emerged from the mist, his survival instincts kicked in.
An Unlikely Alliance
The battle was a blur of fur, teeth, and terrifying roars. The silver wolf fought bravely, but the grizzly's sheer size was overwhelming. With a brutal swipe of its paw, the bear threw the silver wolf aside. She skidded across the ice, whimpering in pain. The bear then turned its deadly gaze back to Liam, who was frantically clawing at the ice to free his frozen jacket. Just as the bear raised its massive claws for a fatal blow, the black alpha leaped through the air, sinking his teeth into the bear's shoulder.
The rest of the pack followed, swarming the giant predator in a coordinated assault. Seizing the distraction, Liam summoned a final burst of adrenaline, ripping his jacket free from the ice. He scrambled toward his discarded gear bag a few yards away, pulling out an emergency flare gun he always carried. Aiming straight at the sky above the bear, he pulled the trigger. A blinding red flash exploded with a deafening hiss, illuminating the misty lake in a hellish crimson glow.

Terrified by the sudden fire and noise, the grizzly roared in frustration, turned, and bolted back into the dense safety of the forest. The wolves did not pursue. Silence returned to the lake, broken only by the heavy panting of man and beasts. The black alpha stood panting, his yellow eyes fixed on Liam. Slowly, the silver wolf hobbled back over to Liam. She gently nudged his hand with her wet nose, letting out a soft whimper of gratitude.
The alpha bowed his head slightly toward Liam, a silent gesture of profound respect between two survivors. Then, with a low howl, he turned and led the pack back into the misty woods. The silver wolf paused at the treeline, looking back at Liam one last time before disappearing into the white fog. Standing alone on the ice, Liam felt the warmth of life returning to his frozen limbs. He realized that in saving a wild soul, he had finally found a reason to save his own.
