John had always prided himself on being a dutiful son. When his elderly mother, Beatrice, began showing early signs of dementia, he didn't hesitate to move her into his warm, yellow-painted vintage home. To ensure she received the best care while he worked, he hired Amanda, a soft-spoken woman in a grey floral blouse who came with impeccable references. John believed he had found an angel.

But on a Tuesday afternoon, John returned home early. Carrying heavy brown paper bags filled with fresh groceries, he unlocked the front door and stepped into the hallway. The house was unusually quiet, except for a muffled, distressing sound coming from the kitchen.

He stepped closer, his brow furrowing as he heard a harsh, sneering voice.

"You old hag, eat this!"

John's heart stopped. He dropped the grocery bags, apples and canned goods spilling across the linoleum floor. In the center of the kitchen, his fragile mother sat at the table, tears streaming down her pale cheeks behind her glasses. Amanda was hovering over her, aggressively forcing food into her mouth.

"Stop, please, stop!" Beatrice whimpered, her voice trembling with sheer terror.

A wave of primal protective rage washed over John. He didn't think; he reacted. Charging forward into the kitchen, his brown leather jacket rustling, he screamed at the top of his lungs.

"Get away from her!"

He grabbed Amanda by her shoulders, violently pulling her away from his weeping mother. Amanda stumbled backward, her face twisting from shock to fury.

"No, get off of me!" she screamed, clawing at his arms.

John shoved her back against the yellow refrigerator, kicking her away to create space between her and his mother. Amanda glared at him, panting, her mask of professionalism completely shattered. Beatrice sobbed quietly, clutching her purple knit sweater as the nightmare in her own home was finally exposed.
