A Promise Kept

As Jax stepped closer to Marcus, his eyes caught a glimpse of the silver chain hanging around Lily's neck. Dangling from it was a heavy silver ring engraved with a winged skull—the original emblem of their motorcycle club. Jax's heart skipped a beat. He looked from the ring back to Lily's face, seeing the unmistakable resemblance to his late best friend and former club president, Thomas.

"Where did you get that ring, kid?" Jax asked, his voice suddenly thick with emotion.
"It was my dad's," Lily whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Thomas Miller. He told me if I was ever in trouble, to look for the winged skull."

A wave of fierce determination washed over Jax. Thomas had died saving Jax's life in a motorcycle accident ten years ago, and Jax had spent a decade wishing he could repay the debt. Now, Thomas's daughter was standing right behind him, seeking his protection. Jax turned back to Marcus, his eyes burning with a new, personal fury.

"You're standing in Thomas Miller's house now," Jax growled, stepping directly into Marcus's face. "And this girl is family. If I ever see your face, or your friends' faces, anywhere near her again, you won't live to regret it. Now get out."

Marcus looked at the fierce, united front of the bikers, then at Jax's terrifying expression. Realizing he was completely outmatched, his face paled. Without another word, Marcus and his thugs turned and hurried out into the raging storm, their tires screeching as they fled into the night.

The diner fell quiet except for the sound of the rain. Jax turned around, looking down at Lily with a warm, protective smile. He gently placed a massive hand on her shoulder.

"You're safe now, Lily," Jax said softly. "Your father's family has got your back."
