The silence in the hotel hallway was suffocating. Sophie stared at Richard, her mind racing to process the word he had just used. For as long as she could remember, Richard had been introduced to her as a distant family uncle—a kind, wealthy benefactor who kept his distance out of respect for her late mother's wishes. But the raw, paternal fury in Richard's eyes told a completely different story.

"G-granddaughter?" Sophie whispered, pushing herself up from the floor with trembling arms. "Uncle Richard, what are you talking about?"

Richard’s stern expression softened instantly as he looked down at her. He knelt on the plush carpet, ignoring the dirt, and gently took her cold hands in his.

"I am so sorry, Sophie," Richard said, his voice thick with unshed tears. "I should have told you the truth years ago. You are not my niece. Your father was my son, Julian. He loved your mother deeply, but before they could marry, he was tragically taken from us in an accident. Your mother was devastated and cut ties with our family, fearing my disapproval. I only found out about your existence after she passed."

Sophie gasped, the pieces of her fractured childhood suddenly clicking into place. But before she could speak, Lauren let out a harsh, nervous laugh.

"Richard, you're being hysterical! You have no proof of this girl's claims. She is a fraud looking for a handout!" Lauren hissed, trying desperately to regain her footing.

Richard stood up slowly, towering over his wife with cold disdain.

"I don't need proof from her, Lauren, because I found the DNA test results in your private safe this morning," Richard revealed, his voice dangerously quiet. "The tests you intercepted months ago. The ones that proved Sophie is my biological granddaughter. You knew the truth, and you tried to blackmail her into leaving the country so she wouldn't inherit Julian's estate."

Lauren's face drained of all color. The elaborate web of lies she had spun to protect her own grip on the family fortune was collapsing right before her eyes.
