Previously: When maid Grace investigated a strange noise beneath her wealthy employer's antique bed, she expected dust—not a terrifying secret that would force her to run for her life.

The Price of Freedom

The bedroom erupted into chaos. George fired a shot, the bullet chipping the plaster on the ceiling as Julian knocked his arm aside. The massive, shadowy creature stood tall, positioning its imposing body directly between the trembling housekeeper and the armed patriarch. In that moment, Grace realized the true monster in the room wasn't the creature under the bed—it was the man holding the gun.

Julian turned his glowing eyes toward Grace. With a surprisingly gentle gesture, he dropped the iron key into her trembling hand and pointed toward the heavy oak door. He was setting her free, sacrificing his own safety to save a stranger from his father's cold-blooded desperation.

"Go, Grace! Run!" Julian seemed to gurgle, his voice a distorted but recognizable human rasp.

Grace didn't hesitate. She scrambled to her feet, shoved the key into the lock, and threw the door open. Behind her, she heard George weeping, begging his son for forgiveness as the creature began to tear down the heavy velvet drapes, starting a fire with a knocked-over candle to ensure his father could never chase her.

Grace sprinted out of the mansion and into the pouring rain, running all the way to the local police station. When the authorities arrived at Vance Manor hours later, the estate was nothing but a smoldering ruin. George Vance’s body was recovered from the ashes, but of Julian, there was absolutely no sign.

Today, Grace lives in a quiet town far away, but she always leaves a small light burning by her bedside. She knows that sometimes, the things we fear most in the dark are simply looking for a way to be free.
