Previously: When seventeen-year-old Tess walked into a gritty diner and revealed a secret tattoo, she didn't expect a rugged biker to risk his life to save her from a dangerous confrontation.

A New Beginning

Before they could plan their next move, headlights flooded the warehouse. The roar of multiple engines announced Butch’s arrival. He and three of his men stepped into the warehouse, their expressions grim. Butch stepped forward, a smug grin on his face.

"Well, well. Slate, the loyal brother, harboring a thief's daughter. Give us the girl, and maybe we let you live."

Slate didn't back down. He stepped in front of Tess, shielding her completely. He reached into his leather vest and pulled out a heavy, rusted key, tossing it at Butch's feet.

"The money is in the locker at the old transit station. Take it. It's everything Marcus had. But you touch a single hair on this girl's head, and I will personally dismantle this entire club. The debt is paid."

Butch picked up the key, his greedy eyes shining. He looked at Slate, then at Tess, realizing that Slate was ready to fight to the death. Recognizing the danger of a cornered beast, Butch nodded slowly, signaling his men to retreat.

"We're even, Slate. But she's banned from our territory."

As the bikers rode away, Tess burst into tears, realizing the immense sacrifice Slate had just made. He had given up his security and his standing in the club to buy her freedom. Slate turned to her, offering a rare, warm smile.

"Your father saved my life once, Tess. Today, I finally paid him back. You're safe now."

He helped her onto his bike, promising to take her to a safe town far away where she could start over. Tess realized that while she had lost her father, she had found a guardian angel in a leather vest. True family isn't defined by blood, but by the sacrifices we make to protect those we love.
