The Secret Folder Delivered at the Gala Changed Her Entire Life Forever
Previously: When a military officer interrupted a glamorous gala with a classified black folder, Clara's world shattered. The secret inside revealed her father's true fate—and a betrayal closest to home.
The Ghost of the Past
Jack opened the folder, his eyes scanning the single sheet of paper inside. Clara watched his face, searching for any sign of reassurance. Instead, she saw the color drain from his cheeks. His jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle pulsed beneath his skin. He closed the folder with a sharp snap, his knuckles turning white.
"Jack, what is it? You're frightening me," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "Is it a deployment?"
Jack didn't answer immediately. He looked across the table at General Sterling, Clara's godfather and the man who had raised her after her father, Captain Thomas Cole, was declared missing in action twenty years ago. The General sat perfectly still, his eyes locked onto the black folder in Jack's hand, his expression unreadable.
Jack took Clara by the arm and gently led her away from the crowded table, toward the quiet alcove near the French doors. Miller followed at a respectful distance, keeping guard. When they were out of earshot, Jack opened the folder again and turned it toward her.
"This is a distress signal, Clara. It was transmitted less than an hour ago from a remote facility in the Pacific," Jack said, his voice a low, urgent rasp. "It matches your father's unique military cipher. The cipher only he knew."
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "That's impossible. My father died when I was eight. General Sterling told me his helicopter went down over the ocean."
"That was the official story," Jack replied, his eyes dark with anger. "But this document proves otherwise. He survived, and he's been held in secret captivity. But what's worse, Clara... the authorization to classify his survival and leave him behind was signed by someone we know. Someone who wanted him silenced."
Clara stared at the bottom of the document, her heart shattering as she recognized the elegant, looping signature of the man who had pretended to be her protector for two decades: General Sterling.
