The Reckoning

With a decisive heave, Grace lifted the lid of the canister. The light from the ornate chandelier caught the object within, making it blaze with an ancient, almost holy light. It was a 17th-century Spanish royal monstrance, wrought from solid gold and encrusted with raw emeralds and baroque pearls, their luster dulled slightly by centuries of ocean calcification. Armand’s smug grin disintegrated, replaced by a mask of paralyzed horror. His hand went limp, and the crystal champagne flute slipped from his grasp, shattering on the marble floor in a spectacular spray of red wine and glass shards that spattered his polished oxfords.

"Eighty million dollars in Spanish royal gold, Armand," Grace stated, her voice calm and razor-sharp, cutting through his shock. "And my contract guarantees me ninety percent." Armand stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat, the color draining from his face. His grandfather's lost treasure, a legend whispered in hushed tones, was now in the hands of a woman he’d dismissed as pond scum. He finally found his voice, a choked, trembling stammer. "T-that galleon was my grandfather's lost fleet... that treasure belongs to the Dubois estate!" Grace stepped closer, planting her hand firmly on the heavy gold. "Your grandfather abandoned it to the abyss," she declared, her eyes locking onto his. "And tomorrow morning, I buy your yacht company." Armand’s knees visibly trembled as his jaw hung slack, the arrogant billionaire utterly ruined, his empire about to be claimed by the woman he had so carelessly underestimated.
