She Fell on a Wet Sidewalk While Her Fiancé Laughed, but a Stranger Intervened
The Fall on the Rain-Slicked Sidewalk
The autumn wind swept through the city streets, carrying with it a cold, persistent drizzle that turned the concrete into a treacherous mirror. Paige hurried along the sidewalk, her bright orange jacket a stark contrast to the gray, overcast sky. She was already late, her boots splashing through shallow puddles as she tried to keep her balance on the slick surface. She was rushing to meet Connor, her fiancé of two years, who had insisted they meet outside his favorite downtown hangout. He had refused to pick her up, claiming he didn’t want the damp weather to ruin the freshly detailed leather seats of his new sports car.
Lost in her thoughts and shivering from the chill, Paige didn't notice the patch of wet, decaying leaves plastered against the old brick wall. In a split second, her foot lost traction. Her arms flailed as she tried to regain her footing, but the slick ground offered no grip. With a sharp gasp, she slipped and crashed heavily onto the hard, wet pavement. Pain flared in her knee and wrist, and her purse spilled its contents across the dirty sidewalk.
"Woo! Look at her!"
The loud, mocking shout echoed off the brick walls. Paige looked up, expecting to see concerned onlookers. Instead, she saw Connor standing just a few yards away, wearing his signature grey varsity jacket. He was surrounded by his buddies, all of them snickering. Rather than rushing to her side, Connor chuckled, shaking his head in embarrassment. "And she wiped out," another one of his friends added, pointing and laughing loudly at her struggle.
Tears of humiliation stung Paige's eyes. But before she could try to push herself up, a man in a dark blue windbreaker rushed forward, kneeling beside her in the rain. It was Derek, a complete stranger who had witnessed the entire scene. "Hey, you okay? Easy, easy, let me help you up. You good?" Derek asked, his voice filled with genuine concern as he gently supported her arm. Paige nodded softly, whispering, "Yeah." Derek helped her steady herself, then looked back at her reassuringly. "All right, stay right here." His expression hardened as he turned toward Connor and his laughing friends. Glaring at them, Derek demanded, "Is that how you treat people?"
