She Fell on a Wet Sidewalk While Her Fiancé Laughed, but a Stranger Intervened
Previously: When Paige slipped on a wet sidewalk, her fiancé didn't offer a hand—he laughed. But a kind stranger's intervention forced her to make a life-altering choice.
The Cold Confrontation
The laughter from Connor’s group died down slightly, replaced by a tense, heavy silence. Connor stepped forward, his hands shoved into the pockets of his grey varsity jacket. Instead of showing any remorse or checking on his injured fiancée, his face twisted into a defensive sneer. He didn't like being challenged, especially not in front of his friends by a stranger in a simple blue windbreaker.
"Mind your own business, buddy," Connor spat, taking a step toward Derek. "She's fine. She's just clumsy. We don't need some random guy playing hero."
Derek didn’t flinch. He stood his ground, his physical presence forming a protective shield between Paige and the mocking group. "I don't care who you think you are," Derek said, his voice low and steady, vibrating with quiet authority. "You don't stand there laughing when someone falls. That’s a human being, not your entertainment. Have some respect."
Paige stood shivering in her wet orange jacket, rubbing her sore wrist. She looked at Connor, really looked at him, as if seeing him for the first time. The man she was planning to marry was standing there, more concerned with his pride and his friends' approval than her well-being. He hadn't even asked if she was hurt. The realization hit her harder than the concrete sidewalk had just moments before. All the times he had belittled her, minimized her feelings, and put his own comfort first flashed through her mind in a painful cascade.
Connor rolled his eyes, clearly annoyed by the escalating drama. "Hey, Paige, stop acting like a victim and get over here," he ordered, gesturing impatiently. "Stop making a scene with this loser. Let's go."
