Leo froze. Beneath the sound of his own heavy breathing and Maria's desperate whispers, he heard it—a faint, rhythmic thumping from within the wood. It wasn't the sound of a settling casket. It was a frantic, desperate tapping. He looked down at the lid, then up at Maria, whose face had drained of all color.

"Contagious?"

Leo whispered, disbelief turning into cold suspicion.

"If he passed away this morning, why is there a noise coming from inside?"

Maria tried to block him, her voice rising in pitch.

"It's just gases, Leo! The doctor warned me about this. You need to leave the room right now!"

She grabbed his arm, trying to drag him toward the exit, but Leo’s suspicion turned to protective fury. He shoved her aside, his eyes locking onto the heavy brass latches. They weren't just latches—they were locked from the outside with heavy-duty padlocks. A dead man doesn't need to be locked in.

Ignoring Maria's screams, Leo grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker. With adrenaline surging through his veins, he wedged the iron tip under the lock brackets and pried with all his might. The wood splintered with a deafening crack. Maria lunged at him, clawing at his face, but he threw her off. With one final heave, the locks snapped.

Leo threw the heavy lid open. The sight before him made his stomach drop. His father, Arthur, lay bound and gagged, his face pale and slick with sweat, desperately gasping for air through his nose.

"Dad!"

Leo gasped, instantly tearing the tape from his father's mouth and untying his wrists. Arthur choked, drawing in a massive lungful of air, before pointing a trembling finger at Maria.

"She did this,"

Arthur wheezed, his voice hoarse.

"She forced me to sign the estate papers, and then she tried to bury me alive!"
