She Saved A Hungry Biker, Now He Has Returned To Save Her Legacy
The bell above the heavy oak door of the Highway 99 Diner chimed, but Hannah didn't look up immediately. She was staring at the red foreclosure notice sitting on her counter. The local developer, Richard Vance, had been breathing down her neck for months, eager to tear down her late father's legacy to build a highway rest stop. Hannah was down to her last hundred dollars, but her father had taught her never to let a soul leave their diner hungry. That was when Hank walked in. With his scruffy white beard, black leather vest, and heavy boots, he looked like trouble. Yet, Hannah only saw a tired man who had traveled a long road.
A Simple Act of Mercy
She walked over to his corner booth, holding a steaming, sizzling plate of steak and eggs. Smiling warmly, she set it down and said,
"Eat while it's hot, it's on the house."
Hank looked up, his weathered eyes narrowing slightly. He looked at the rich plate, then at Hannah's fading pink uniform.
"You sure you're not scared of a biker like me?"
he asked with a slight smile, his voice like gravel. Hannah didn't blink. She thought of Richard Vance and the lawyers who had been terrorizing her.
"A hungry man isn't the one I'm afraid of,"
she replied softly. Hank stared at her for a long moment, then picked up his fork. He took a bite and murmured,
"I never forget a kindness."
Minutes later, Hank walked out into the dusty parking lot. Hannah followed him, intending to wipe down the outdoor tables, but stopped in her tracks. A dozen thunderous motorcycles roared into the lot, lining up behind Hank. Before she could panic, Hank walked up to her. He pulled a thick, rubber-banded stack of hundred-dollar bills from his vest.
"We'll buy every plate you've got left, and we'll pay off every dollar this diner owes,"
Hank said, handing her the fortune. Hannah stared at the money, then looked up at his eyes, recognizing the faded tattoo of her father's old military unit on his forearm. Her eyes filled with tears as she whispered,
"You came back?"
