She Shared Her Last Loaf of Bread With Strangers, Never Expecting Who Would Return
Previously: When Katherine shared her final loaf of bread with three starving travelers on a dusty road, she thought it was her final act of kindness. She was wrong.
The Landlord's Reckoning
Before Katherine could fully comprehend Edward's words, the screech of tires echoed down the road. Silas, the greedy landlord, jumped out of his dusty truck, clutching a shotgun and a stack of legal eviction papers. His eyes narrowed when he saw the luxury cars and the wealthy men standing near Katherine's makeshift camp.
Silas assumed these city men were potential investors looking to buy up the valley. He immediately put on a fake smile, trying to look professional while keeping his shotgun lowered. "Pardon the eyesore, gentlemen," Silas sneered, pointing a dirty finger at Katherine. "These squatters are trespassing on my land. I was just about to have the sheriff cart them off to jail."
Edward’s warm demeanor vanished instantly. He turned to face Silas, his posture rigid and commanding. "This woman and her companions are not going anywhere," Edward said, his voice dripping with absolute authority.
Silas laughed, waving his legal papers in the air. "Oh yeah? And who is going to stop me? I own this entire property, and she owes me five hundred dollars in back rent. Unless you have her deed in your pocket, I suggest you step aside!"
Edward reached slowly into his tailored wool jacket and pulled out a thick, black leather folder. He opened it, revealing an official document stamped with a gold seal. He looked at Silas with a cold, triumphant smile.
"I don't just have her deed, Silas," Edward whispered. "I bought the bank that holds your mortgage. As of nine o'clock this morning, you are officially in default."
Silas’s face drained of color. He staggered back, looking at the papers in Edward's hands. The power dynamic had completely shifted in a matter of seconds, leaving the cruel landlord utterly powerless.
