She Shared Her Last Loaf of Bread With Strangers, Never Expecting Who Would Return
Previously: When Katherine shared her final loaf of bread with three starving travelers on a dusty road, she thought it was her final act of kindness. She was wrong.
A Promise Kept
Edward stepped closer to Silas, taking the shotgun from the stunned man’s weak grip and handing it to one of his associates. "You have exactly twenty-four hours to pack your belongings and vacate your office," Edward commanded. "If I see you near Katherine or any of these families again, I will personally ensure you face legal ruin." Silas, utterly defeated, scrambled back into his truck and sped away in a flurry of dust.
Katherine stared at Edward, tears streaming down her face. "I don't understand," she whispered. "Why would you do this for us? We are just strangers."
Edward knelt down in the dirt, taking Katherine’s worn hands in his own. "We are not strangers, Katherine," he said softly. "Twenty years ago, I was a starving orphan boy freezing on these very streets. Your late husband, Thomas, found me. He gave me his coat, fed me, and told me to never lose hope. He made me promise that if I ever made it big, I would pay it forward."
Edward explained that he had returned to the town to find Thomas, only to learn of his passing and Katherine’s struggle. He disguised himself and his partners as beggars to see if the spirit of Thomas still lived on in Katherine. "And last night, even when you had nothing left, you proved that love and kindness are still alive," Edward smiled.
Edward handed Katherine the deed to her cottage, along with the deeds to the land for all her companions. He also announced that he was funding a brand-new community kitchen and farm, with Katherine appointed as the director with a lifetime salary. True wealth is not measured by what we keep in our pockets, but by what we are willing to share when we have nothing left.
