The grand reception hall of the Grandon Estate was alive with the gentle hum of string instruments and the clinking of champagne flutes under luminous crystal chandeliers. But for seventeen-year-old Grace, the evening was a nightmare. Standing in the center of the room, her eyes welled with tears as her stepmother, Victoria, sneered. Dressed in an exquisite copper lace gown, Victoria's eyes flashed with malice. With a cold, calculated movement, she raised a pair of silver shears and sliced through the strap of Grace's royal blue velvet dress. The fabric fell, exposing Grace to the hushed gasps of the wealthy onlookers.

"You don't belong here, Grace," Victoria whispered, her voice dripping with venom. "And you certainly don't deserve to wear family heirlooms."

Grace sobbed, clutching the ruined fabric to her chest, her humiliation complete under the burning stares of high society. But before she could flee, a commanding voice broke the tension. Charles, a silver-templed man of immense stature and the host of the gala, stepped forward. Clad in a dark grey tuxedo, he carried a silver tray. He looked at Victoria with quiet disdain before turning his warm, protective gaze to the weeping teenager.

Reaching onto the tray, Charles lifted a breathtaking diamond necklace. At its center hung a heavy silver shield pendant, glittering brilliantly under the chandeliers. He stepped close and gently draped it around Grace's neck.

"Please don't cry, my dear. It's yours," Charles said comfortingly, his voice wrapping around her like a shield.

Grace looked up, stunned. But as Charles adjusted the clasp, his eyes caught the intricate engraving on the back of the shield crest. His breath hitched. His face paled, and his hands began to tremble.

"Wait... this mark..." he whispered, his voice cracking as he stared at the crest.
