Charles looked at Grace, really looked at her, and saw Marianne’s bright, resilient eyes staring back at him. The realization that this abused, humiliated girl was his own flesh and blood filled him with a mixture of profound grief and roaring anger. He turned to Victoria, his stature towering over her.

"You knew," Charles said, his voice echoing through the silent hall. "You knew who she was, and you kept her from me. You treated my daughter like garbage while living off the trust fund I provided."

Victoria opened her mouth to lie, but the evidence was undeniable. Charles called for security, demanding that Victoria be escorted out of the gala and out of his life forever.
