The Grand Plaza ballroom was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive champagne, and whispered secrets. For twenty-two-year-old Sarah Calder, however, it was just another grueling shift to pay her rent. Wearing her standard black-and-white catering uniform, her dark hair tied back in a neat black ribbon, she carried a heavy silver tray loaded with crystal flutes. She tried to remain invisible, a ghost among the elite, but one piece of her past clung to her neck: a vibrant green jade pendant, carved in the shape of a delicate lotus flower. It was the only thing her mother, Marion Calder, had left her before passing away.

Suddenly, a cold hand clamped onto Sarah’s wrist, causing the champagne glasses to rattle dangerously. Sarah gasped, looking up into the pale, aristocratic face of Eleanor Vance, one of the city's most prominent philanthropists. Eleanor’s styled wavy grey hair caught the ballroom's golden light, but her eyes were fixed entirely on Sarah's chest. She was staring at the jade pendant with an intensity that bordered on madness.

"That pendant. Where did you get it?"

Eleanor asked, her voice a hushed, sharp whisper that sliced through the ambient chatter. Startled, Sarah instinctively reached up to touch the cool green stone.

"It's my mother's,"

she replied softly, her heart hammering against her ribs. Eleanor’s eyes widened in sheer shock, the color instantly draining from her face. She took a step back, her hand trembling violently.

"What... what is your mother's name?"

she whispered, her voice cracking. Sarah looked around nervously, noticing that several nearby guests were starting to stare.

"Marion Calder,"

Sarah answered, her voice trembling. Eleanor gasped in pure horror, her hands flying to her mouth. She muttered a name under her breath, and before Sarah could offer assistance, the older woman's eyes rolled back. Eleanor collapsed backward onto the polished marble floor, sending a nearby flower arrangement crashing down. Onlookers screamed, and the music abruptly stopped.
