My Sister Was Locked in a Crate and My Uncle Held the Key
Previously: Searching an industrial salvage yard for her missing sister, Amanda makes a terrifying discovery inside a locked wooden crate—and faces a shocking family betrayal.
The Dark Truth in the Scrap Yard
The sudden bang echoed through the silent yard, vibrating through Amanda's very bones. She knew that desperate knock; it was the frantic plea of someone running out of precious air. Clawing at the thick hemp ropes, her fingernails split and bled, but she ignored the sharp pain.
"Hang on! I'm going to get you out!" Amanda screamed, throwing her weight against the heavy wooden latch.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Amanda," a cold, familiar voice barked from the shadows.
Amanda spun around, her breath catching in her throat. Standing near a pile of rusted girders was her Uncle Gary. His face was pale, his eyes sunken, and in his right hand, he clutched a heavy iron wrench. He looked nothing like the warm uncle she remembered from her childhood; he looked like a desperate man pushed to the absolute brink.
"Uncle Gary?" Amanda gasped, backing up against the crate. "What is this? Who is in there? Tell me you didn't do this!"
Gary took a slow, menacing step forward, the heavy wrench swaying slightly at his side.
"You shouldn't have come looking, kiddo. Some things are better left buried in the scrap," he said, his voice trembling with a terrifying mixture of guilt and anger. "Just walk away. For your own sake, walk away right now."
But Amanda refused to back down. The muffled cries from inside the crate grew more frantic. It was a voice she recognized all too well—it was Lily.
"That's my sister!" Amanda screamed, grabbing a rusted iron pipe from the ground and holding it defensively. "You locked your own niece in a box! Are you insane?"
Gary closed his eyes for a brief second, a grimace of pain crossing his features.
"You don't understand," he hissed, his eyes snapping open. "I didn't have a choice. The people I owe money to... they were coming for her. If they found her, she'd be dead. This was the only way!"
