My Sister Was Locked in a Crate and My Uncle Held the Key
Previously: Searching an industrial salvage yard for her missing sister, Amanda makes a terrifying discovery inside a locked wooden crate—and faces a shocking family betrayal.
A Sacrifice in the Shadows
Amanda's mind spun as she tried to process her uncle's twisted logic. But there was no time to argue. The air inside the dark crate was rapidly running out.
"If you want to protect her, then help me open it!" Amanda cried, tears cutting clean tracks through the grime on her face. "Please, Gary. She's family."
Gary stared at the iron pipe in Amanda's hand, then down at his own heavy wrench. The tension in the yard was thick enough to choke on. For a terrifying, breathless moment, Amanda thought he might strike her to keep his secret. Instead, Gary let out a broken sob and dropped the wrench to the dirt. It fell with a heavy clatter.
He rushed forward, his rough, calloused hands joining hers as they frantically tore at the tight ropes. Together, using all their strength, they pried open the heavy wooden lid of the crate.
Lily collapsed outward, coughing and gasping for air. Amanda caught her sister, wrapping her arms tightly around her trembling, frail frame.
"I've got you, Lily. You're safe," Amanda wept, rocking her sister.
Lily clung to her, but as she gathered her breath, she looked up at Uncle Gary with tears in her eyes.
"He's telling the truth, Amanda," Lily whispered hoarsely. "The men came to the house. Gary hid me here right before they broke the door down. He saved my life."
Before Amanda could speak, the distant, wailing siren of police cars pierced the quiet afternoon. Gary smiled weakly, pulling a cheap flip phone from his pocket.
"I called them twenty minutes ago," Gary said, his voice thick with emotion. "I gave them the names of the men I owed. It's over. I'm going to prison, but you two are going home."
As the flashing blue and red lights began to reflect off the rusted metal of the yard, Amanda realized that family loyalty can wear the strangest, most terrifying disguises. True love isn't always clean; sometimes, it requires getting dirty to save the ones we cherish most.
