Previously: When a young champion sneers at a 68-year-old woman entering a high-stakes shooting competition, he has no idea he is mocking a legendary figure with a score to settle.

The Ghost of the Range

Lawrence’s heart hammered against his ribs. The name on the registration form was Lois Vance. Thirty-five years ago, Lois Vance had been an Olympic gold medalist, a sharpshooting prodigy who had set world records that still stood to this day. But at the peak of her career, she had suddenly vanished from the public eye. Rumors had swirled for decades—some said she had suffered a career-ending injury, while others whispered that she had been forced out by corrupt officials who wanted to clear the path for their own favored competitors. To see her standing here, in this local range, was like seeing a ghost.

Justin, recovering from his initial shock, reddened with embarrassment. He refused to let an old woman upstage him in front of his fans.

"It was a fluke!"
Justin snapped, stepping closer to her lane.
"You got lucky. If you're really as good as that lucky streak suggests, prove it. Let's do a sudden-death round. One shot each, moving targets. If you win, I'll step down from the championship. If you lose, you pack your bags and never show your face here again."

Lawrence stepped forward, his voice shaking.

"Justin, I suggest you think twice. You don't know who you are talking to."
But Justin waved the official off, his eyes locked onto Lois with pure defiance.

Lois turned her head slowly, looking at the young man. There was no anger in her eyes, only a deep, cold pool of experience. She remembered the arrogance of young shooters from her own youth—the ones who thought raw talent could replace discipline and respect.

"I accept,"
Lois said quietly.
"But let's make it interesting. We use vintage, iron-sight pistols. No electronic assists. Just pure skill."
