A Soldier Returns From the Dead to Find His Son Freezing in the Snow
Previously: Returning from a grueling deployment, soldier Hunter finds his young son freezing in the snowy backyard while his wife and her new husband sit warmly inside.
A Father's True Duty
Before David could react, Hunter grabbed him by the collar, pulling him close.
"If you ever touch my son again, or leave him in the cold, you will answer to me," Hunter growled, his voice vibrating with absolute authority.David, suddenly realizing he was dealing with a highly trained combat veteran, trembled and stepped back, his bravado vanishing.
Sarah burst into tears, rushing to Hunter's side.
"Hunter, please! I didn't know it was this bad. David told me he was just going to talk to him. I was so lonely after they told me you died, and David... he helped pay the bills. I made a terrible mistake," she sobbed, looking at her son.
Hunter looked at Sarah, then at little Luke, who was watching him with wide, hopeful eyes. The love he had for his family hadn't changed, but he knew things could never be the same. He looked at David and pointed to the door.
"Get out of this house," Hunter commanded. "Now. Before I call the police for child endangerment."David didn't hesitate; he grabbed his coat and fled into the snowy night.
Turning back to Sarah, Hunter made his position clear. He would protect his son at all costs, and while their marriage might be fractured beyond repair, they had a duty to heal Luke together. He sat on the floor next to the armchair, pulling Luke into his lap. The boy finally smiled, feeling the genuine warmth of his father's embrace. Hunter had survived the worst horrors of war, but his greatest victory would be rebuilding a safe world for his son.
True strength is not found in the battles we fight abroad, but in the love we protect at home.
