The Nightmare Homecoming

The heavy oak doors of the Vance estate had always represented safety to twenty-one-year-old Leo Vance. Returning home after months of rigorous National Guard training, all he wanted was to surprise his seventy-one-year-old grandmother, Eleanor. In his hands, he clutched a vibrant bunch of fresh yellow tulips, her absolute favorite. He could already picture her warm smile and the smell of freshly baked cookies wafting from the kitchen. But as he stepped into the grand foyer, the peaceful silence of the afternoon was shattered by a sound that made his blood run cold.

"Please! Stop! Have mercy!"

It was Eleanor’s voice, terrified and weak. Leo rushed forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. What he saw in the center of the polished walnut foyer defied comprehension. A woman in a brilliant, blood-red dress was standing over Eleanor, her face twisted in pure malice. It was Vanessa, Eleanor’s estranged stepdaughter. With sickening force, Vanessa stomped her heel onto the frail elderly woman, who lay helpless on the floor in her pink shirt, screaming in agony.

For a split second, shock paralyzed Leo. The tulips slipped from his fingers, scattering across the cold, polished wood. But as Vanessa raised her foot to strike again, Leo’s military training and instinct took over. He couldn't let his grandmother die.

With a roar of fury, Leo charged. He leaped into the air, executing a powerful, desperate flying kick. His boot connected squarely with Vanessa’s shoulder, sending her flying backward through the air. The momentum carried her crashing straight into the grand walnut staircase. The wood splintered with a deafening screech, sending debris showering over the polished floor. Vanessa collapsed into the wreckage, groaning in defeat. Leo rushed to his grandmother's side, both of them screaming in a mixture of anger, shock, and adrenaline as the dust settled around them.
