A Mother’s Silent Sacrifice

The neon lights of the diner buzzed overhead, casting a warm but stark glow on the booth where Clara sat. Clutching her green cardigan tightly around her shoulders, she tried to ignore the persistent, hollow ache in her stomach. Today was Toby’s seventh birthday, and she had exactly four dollars and fifty cents left in her purse. It was only enough for a single, basic hamburger. No fries, no soda, just tap water.

With trembling hands, Clara used a plastic knife to carefully divide the burger into two equal halves. She slid one half toward Toby and the other toward her five-year-old daughter, Lily. Her children’s eyes lit up at the sight of the modest treat.

"Mom, what about you? Aren't you eating?" Toby asked, his innocent eyes looking up at her.

Clara forced a bright, reassuring smile, though her heart was breaking. She took a slow sip of her ice water to quiet her grumbling stomach.

"I already ate earlier, sweetie," she lied softly, patting his hand. "I'm still full. You two enjoy."

Toby took a eager bite, a radiant grin spreading across his face.

"This is the best birthday ever. Thank you, mom!"
he cheered. Clara smiled back, but her eyes welled with a subtle, devastating sadness that she quickly tried to blink away.

A few booths away, Richard sat quietly in his gray blazer. He had been watching the small family, initially just observing the crowd, but now his chest tightened. He saw Clara’s eyes linger on the food, saw the slight tremor in her hands, and saw her drink the water to fill her empty stomach. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

"She didn't eat," Richard whispered to himself, his voice thick with concern. "She's starving herself for them."
