Richard couldn't just sit there and do nothing. He stood up, walked over to the counter, and spoke quietly to the cashier. A few minutes later, a waiter approached Clara’s booth carrying a massive tray loaded with double cheeseburgers, golden french fries, milkshakes, and a large slice of chocolate cake with a single candle burning on top.

Clara’s face paled as the food was laid out before her children.

"Excuse me, there’s been a mistake," Clara panicked, her voice dropping to an embarrassed whisper. "We didn't order this. I can't pay for it."

Before the waiter could reply, Richard stepped forward, offering a warm and gentle smile.

"It’s not a mistake, ma'am," Richard said softly. "It’s already paid for. Happy birthday, young man," he added, nodding toward Toby, whose eyes were wide with wonder.

Clara looked at Richard, her defensive walls instantly going up. She felt exposed, her poverty laid bare before a stranger.

"Thank you, but we can't accept charity from strangers," she said, her pride fighting through her exhaustion. "Please, take it back."

Richard pulled out a chair from the adjacent table and sat down, keeping a respectful distance.

"A mother who starves herself so her children can eat should never have to apologize for her circumstances," Richard said gently, his voice filled with genuine respect. "I saw what you did. It was the most beautiful, selfless thing I’ve ever seen. Please, let me do this."

The sincerity in his eyes broke through Clara’s resolve. A single tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek. Toby and Lily looked between their mother and the kind stranger, sensing the gravity of the moment but distracted by the incredible feast in front of them.
