The Pacific roared against the rocks below the glass-and-teak deck, a soundtrack of endless blue that usually calmed Liam's nerves. But today, his heart hammered so loud he could barely hear the waves. He held baby Sophie's warm weight against his chest, her peach onesie already soaked from his plunge into the turquoise pool.

“You're safe, little wave-rider!” he gasped, his voice raw and breathless. “I caught you right at the edge, don't be scared!”

He'd only turned his head for a second to grab a towel from the lounger. In that blink, the cream linen stroller had started rolling — the rear locking pedals somehow disengaged. Sophie had been strapped inside, her bright hazel eyes wide with confusion.

His body had moved before his brain could process the danger. One hand grabbed the stroller's handle, halting its backward slide toward the pool's ledge. The other swept Sophie up, cradling her against his soaked grey henley. He'd been waist-deep in the cold water before he even knew he'd jumped.

Now he stood there, shivering, Sophie safe in his arms, watching his stepmother Astrid stride out onto the terrace with a look of theatrical horror. Her blood-orange silk wrap dress rippled in the ocean breeze, her platinum bob immaculate.

“Look what happened!” she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at him. “Liam backed Sophie's stroller right into the plunge pool!”

Liam's jaw dropped. “What? No, I—”

But his father, Alexander Montgomery, had already frozen mid-step, his dark eyes narrowing. The aerospace billionaire's charcoal silk suit seemed to absorb the golden sunset light as he turned to face his son.

“Liam, what is the meaning of this?” Alexander's voice was low, dangerous.

Liam's throat tightened. He could feel Sophie's tiny fingers gripping his chest. “Dad, I swear — I heard the wheels clicking across the teak deck and jumped into the pool to catch her before the stroller tipped!”

Tears mingled with water droplets on his cheeks. He'd spent his whole life trying to protect his little sister. He'd never imagined his own father would doubt him.

Before Alexander could respond, Maya burst onto the deck, her pastel yellow sundress fluttering as she sprinted between them. The 11-year-old held up a white iPad mini, her braided pigtails bouncing.

“Dad, don't believe Astrid—watch the nanny-cam recording from two minutes ago!” she shouted, her voice breathless but triumphant.

The screen flickered to life, showing the surfboard-rack camera feed stamped at 12:08:37 PM. There, in crisp 4K, was Astrid — lifting both rear locking pedals on the cream linen stroller with her toe, then giving the backrest a sharp shove toward the pool.

Her recorded voice played through the iPad's speaker, cold and theatrical: “Nobody is watching the deck; one push and I'm finally rid of both the kid and the brother.”

The color drained from Astrid's face. Her hand flew to her chest, but it was too late. Alexander's roar shook the terrace.

“Security, grab her! You tried to drown my child on camera—get her off my beach house deck in cuffs!”

Two uniformed guards rushed forward, clamping steel handcuffs onto Astrid's wrists. She was dragged away, her heels scraping against the teak, her mouth hanging open in stunned silence.

Liam held Sophie tighter, feeling her small heartbeat against his chest. Maya wrapped her arms around them both, and Alexander pulled them all into a protective embrace.

But even as the first wave of relief washed over him, Liam couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. Astrid's face, twisted in that final moment, had promised more secrets to come.
