Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. But a faint, desperate sound from inside revealed a terrifying truth.

A Desperate Echo

Maria’s grip on Leo’s arm tightened, her fingers digging into his skin as she tried to pull him away from the casket. "We need to leave the room, Leo. The funeral home staff will be here soon to prepare for the private transport. Come, let’s get some fresh air," she urged, her voice trembling with an underlying panic that didn't match her composed exterior.

Leo, still blinded by tears, was about to step back when he heard it. It was a faint, muffled thud. It sounded like a heel striking wood, followed by a frantic, rhythmic scraping. He froze, his eyes widening as he stared down at the casket lid. "Did you hear that?" he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"Hear what? It's just the old house settling, Leo. Please, you're hysterical,"
Maria insisted, her face turning pale as she grabbed his shoulder to drag him away. But Leo was no longer listening. He leaned his ear directly against the polished oak. Another distinct, desperate thump echoed from within.

Realization hit Leo like a physical blow. His father wasn't dead. He was trapped inside. He reached for the heavy brass latches of the casket, but Maria threw herself in front of him, her grieving facade completely vanishing.

"Get away from there! You'll infect the whole house! If you open that, you'll kill us both!"
she shrieked, her eyes wild with a desperation that had nothing to do with a contagious disease.

Leo looked at his stepmother, seeing her clearly for the first time. The expensive jewelry she wore, the sudden "illness" that had claimed his healthy father, and her frantic refusal to let him see the body. "Move, Maria," Leo growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, protective register. When she refused, he shoved her aside, grabbing the heavy brass handle and throwing the latch open.
