My Stepmother Said My Father Died of a Disease, But the Casket Was Thumping
Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. But a faint, desperate sound from inside revealed a terrifying truth.
The Mask Slips
With a heavy groan, the casket lid swung open. Leo gasped, his heart stopping at the horrifying sight. His father, Arthur, lay inside, gasping for breath through the heavy duct tape. His eyes were wide with terror, tears streaming down his face as he looked up at his son. Leo immediately reached in, gently ripping the tape from his father's mouth and slicing the zip ties on his wrists with his pocket knife.
"Leo... thank God,"Arthur choked out, coughing violently as he sat up.
"She did this to me. She poisoned my tea, but it only paralyzed me. When I woke up, I was in this box. She wanted to bury me alive to claim the entire estate before I could sign the new will."
Leo turned around, his eyes burning with fury, but Maria was already fleeing toward the parlor doors. Before she could escape, Leo rushed forward and blocked the exit, locking the heavy doors from the inside. He immediately dialed 911, keeping his eyes locked on his stepmother, who had collapsed onto the floor, sobbing and begging for mercy as her elaborate scheme crumbled around her.
Within minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers illuminated the somber parlor. Maria was led away in handcuffs, facing charges of attempted murder and kidnapping. Arthur was rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the poison was leaving his system, and he would make a full recovery.
Sitting by his father's hospital bed later that evening, Leo held Arthur's hand, grateful for the instinct that had made him listen closely. They had survived a nightmare, but their bond was stronger than ever. Sometimes, the most dangerous monsters are not the ones hiding in the dark, but the ones standing right beside us in plain sight.
