Previously: When nineteen-year-old Toby burst into a rainy diner begging a quiet stranger for help, he had no idea the man in the leather jacket was already waiting for him.

The Shadow at the Door

Toby tried to swallow his tears, his chest heaving as he struggled to find his voice. "It’s Marcus," he whispered, casting a terrified glance toward the window. "He found me. He says my dad owed him money before he died, and now... now he says I have to pay it back with my life."

Before Toby could explain further, the diner door opened again, much slower this time. The bell gave a soft, ominous chime. A tall, imposing man in an expensive wool coat stepped inside, shaking the rain from his umbrella. It was Marcus. His eyes scanned the room, instantly locking onto the back of Toby's green hoodie. A cruel, triumphant smile spread across his face as he walked toward the booth with slow, deliberate steps.

"There you are, kid," Marcus sneered, ignoring Leo entirely. "You can't run from your family's debts. Get up. We're leaving."

Toby whimpered, burying his face in his hands, but Leo didn't flinch. Instead, Leo leaned back in the booth, his calm eyes locking onto Marcus. The tension in the diner was suffocating; even the elderly waitress behind the counter had stopped wiping the grill, sensing the immediate danger.

"The boy isn't going anywhere with you," Leo said, his voice quiet but dripping with steel.

Marcus laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. He leaned over the table, placing his heavy hands on the laminate surface. "And who are you supposed to be? His guardian angel? This is family business, old man. Walk away before you get hurt."

Leo slowly reached into his leather jacket. Marcus tensed, his hand drifting toward his coat pocket, expecting a weapon. But Leo didn't pull out a gun. Instead, he pulled out a worn, silver pocket watch and slid it across the table. When Marcus saw the crest engraved on the silver casing, the color drained from his face.
