Previously: When nineteen-year-old Toby burst into a rainy diner begging a quiet stranger for help, he had no idea the man in the leather jacket was already waiting for him.

A Father's Promise

Marcus stared at the silver watch, his arrogance instantly vanishing. "You..." he whispered, stepping back a pace. "I thought you died in Chicago fifteen years ago."

Leo stood up, his towering frame matching Marcus's height.

"I changed my name, Marcus. But I never forgot the people who threatened my family," Leo said, his voice cold. "The debt Toby's father supposedly owed you was paid in full the day I left. If you ever come near this boy again, I will personally unearth everything we buried back in Illinois. Do we understand each other?"

Marcus swallowed hard, looking between Leo and Toby. He knew Leo wasn't bluffing. Without another word, Marcus turned on his heel and walked out of the diner, disappearing into the rainy night. The headlights outside finally flickered off and the car sped away into the darkness.

Toby sat frozen, staring up at Leo in utter disbelief. "How did you know my father?" he asked, his voice trembling. "Who are you?"

Leo sat back down, his hard expression softening into something deeply emotional. He reached across the table and gently placed his hand over Toby’s shaking fingers.

"I didn't just know your father, Toby," Leo whispered, a tear finally escaping his own eye. "I am your father. I had to leave you with my brother to protect you from men like Marcus when you were a baby. But I've been watching over you from afar every single day."

The shock washed over Toby, followed by a profound sense of relief. For the first time in his life, he wasn't running anymore. He had finally found his home, sitting in a quiet, rainy diner opposite the father he thought he had lost forever.

Sometimes, the protectors we desperately pray for are the ones who have been waiting in the shadows to guide us back home all along.
