A Ghost on the Stone Pathway

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the narrow stone streets of the historic town. Edward walked with his head down, his mind heavy with the familiar, dull ache of grief that had defined his life for the past five years. He wore his favorite navy blazer, the one Clara had bought him for their last anniversary. Reaching into his pocket for his keys, his fingers brushed against a glossy piece of paper. He pulled his hand out, unaware that the small polaroid had slipped loose and drifted silently to the ground behind him.

He had only taken a dozen more steps when a light, youthful voice echoed through the quiet alleyway.

"Mister?"

Edward stopped. He turned around to see a little girl, no older than seven, standing near a sun-drenched stone wall. She had striking red curly hair and wore a bright green jacket that stood out against the gray cobblestones. In her small hand, she held the polaroid. Edward smiled warmly, stepping back toward her.

"Oh, thank you, sweetheart. That must have dropped from my pocket,"
he said, reaching out to take it.

But the little girl didn't hand it over immediately. Instead, she stared intently at the faded image of the beautiful, red-haired woman laughing on a beach. Her brow furrowed in genuine confusion.

"Why do you have a picture of my mommy?"
she asked.

The words felt like a sudden, icy plunge. Edward froze, the smile instantly vanishing from his face. He stepped closer, his chest tightening.

"What did you say?"
he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

The girl held the photo higher, her expression innocent but entirely certain.

"My mommy,"
she repeated, pointing her tiny finger at the woman in the picture.

Edward stared at her, his vision blurring.

"That's my wife,"
he said, his voice trembling with a mix of shock and rising anger.
"She died in an accident years ago."

The little girl tilted her head, looking up at him with wide, honest eyes.

"No. My mom is alive. She's at home."

Edward’s heart hammered against his ribs. The world seemed to tilt on its axis as he stared into the child's face, searching for a lie, but finding only absolute, terrifying truth.
