Previously: When a little girl found a dropped photo of Edward's deceased wife and claimed the woman was her living mother, a devastating web of secrets began to unravel.

The Price of Freedom

The tension on the porch was thick enough to break. The tall man, whose name was Thomas, stepped between Edward and Clara. But Clara placed a hand on his arm, shaking her head.

"No, Thomas. He deserves the truth,"
she sobbed. She turned back to Edward, her eyes filled with a lifetime of pain.
"Edward, I didn't run away because of another man. I ran away because of my father."

Edward frowned, confused. Clara's father had been a powerful, dangerous man with ties to organized crime, a man she had claimed she cut contact with years before they met.

"What does your father have to do with this?"
Edward asked.

"He found me,"
Clara explained, her voice trembling.
"Five years ago, his associates cornered me. They threatened to kill you, Edward. They said if I didn't return to the family and marry the man of his choosing—Thomas—they would make sure you suffered a slow, painful death. Thomas was a childhood friend who agreed to help me. Together, we faked my death in the river so my father's men would think I was gone, allowing us to flee and hide under new identities. But I was already pregnant with Chloe—your daughter, Edward."

Edward felt the ground drop beneath him. He looked at Chloe, whose red curls and bright hazel eyes suddenly mirrored his own late mother’s features. She wasn't Thomas's child; she was his. Thomas had only been protecting Clara and the baby from a ruthless syndicate.

The anger evaporated from Edward's heart, replaced by an overwhelming wave of grief and love. Clara had sacrificed her entire life, her marriage, and her identity to keep him safe.

"She is my daughter?"
Edward whispered, tears streaming down his face.

Clara nodded, smiling through her tears.

"Yes. And now that my father passed away last month, we are finally safe. I was planning to find you, Edward."

Edward stepped forward, and this time, Clara met him halfway, pulling him into a fierce, tearful embrace. After five years of darkness, the truth had finally brought them back to the light, proving that true love can survive even the deepest of secrets.
