The Gift in the Rain

The autumn rain fell in heavy, relentless sheets, washing over the ancient stone archway that marked the entrance to Alice’s modest home. Standing in the downpour, her thirty-year-old son, Chris, looked like a ghost of the boy she had raised. He wore a dark grey hoodie pulled low, covered by a damp leather vest that had seen better days. His eyes were bloodshot, filled with a deep, unspeakable sorrow that made Alice’s heart ache.

Without a word of explanation, Chris stepped forward and pressed a heavy, coarse burlap sack into her fragile hands. The weight of it nearly pulled her down, but she clung to it desperately.

"Take the rice and go, mom," Chris whispered, his voice cracking against the sound of the storm. "Just go inside. Please."

Before Alice could ask him what was wrong, or why he was shivering in the freezing rain, Chris turned on his heel. He walked away into the gray mist, leaving his elderly mother standing alone. Weeping, her joints aching from the cold, Alice dragged the heavy sack inside, shutting the heavy wooden door against the howling wind.

She carried the sack into her dim dining room, where the only light came from a single overhead bulb. With trembling fingers, she hoisted the burlap onto the heavy wooden table and untied the rough twine. She expected to see grains of white rice, but as she parted the fabric, her breath caught in her throat. Resting atop a thin layer of grain was a massive stack of tightly bound hundred-dollar bills, and beside it, a crumpled note labeled simply, "Mom."

As Alice smoothed out the paper with shaking hands, she glanced toward the window. Outside, standing in the shadows of the pouring rain, was Chris. He was watching her, tears streaming down his face, completely drenched. He whispered to the empty air, knowing she couldn't hear him: "I'm sorry, mom. I couldn't say it in front of her." Alice clutched the note to her chest, sobbing violently as she realized her son was in grave danger.
