Alice smoothed out the damp note, her eyes straining to read her son's frantic handwriting. "Mom, they are watching me. Sarah’s people are everywhere. I had to sell the garage and everything I owned to get this money. It’s enough for you to buy a ticket and leave the city tonight. If they know I gave you this, they will take it. Don't look for me. Just run."

The realization hit Alice like a physical blow. Years ago, when she fell gravely ill, Chris had taken out a massive loan from a notorious local figure named Sarah to cover the experimental treatments that saved her life. Alice had assumed Chris had paid it off through hard work at his auto shop. She never knew the interest had spiraled into an inescapable trap, or that Sarah’s enforcers had been shadowing his every move.

Suddenly, a heavy, rhythmic knocking echoed from the front door. Alice’s heart froze. She scrambled to shove the stack of cash back into the burlap sack, hiding it beneath the layers of rice just as the door handle began to rattle. She rushed to the hallway, trying to compose herself.

When she opened the door, she didn't find Chris. Instead, a tall woman in a sleek, expensive trench coat stood on the porch, flanked by two burly men. It was Sarah. She smiled, but her eyes were cold and dead as stone.

"Evening, Alice," Sarah said, stepping inside without an invitation. "We’re looking for Chris. He seems to have emptied his bank accounts today, and we believe he might have left something here for you. Care to invite us in?"

Alice stood her ground, her fragile frame trembling but her resolve hardening. She knew that if Sarah found the money, Chris's sacrifice would be in vain, and his life would be forfeited.
