The rain drummed relentlessly against the glass of the Midnight Harbor Cafe, casting long, distorted shadows across the empty tables. Inside, eighteen-year-old Leo wiped down the laminate counter, the steady hum of the espresso machine his only companion. His manager, Thomas, stood near the register, meticulously counting the evening's receipts with a sour expression. Thomas was a man who measured the world solely in dollars and cents, and tonight, the ledger was short.

Suddenly, a heavy thud rattled the front window. Leo looked up to see a battered man in a worn brown leather jacket collapse against the glass, sliding down onto the wet pavement. His face was bruised, his hands trembling.

A Heartless Ultimatum in the Rain

Leo dropped his rag, moving toward the door. "Thomas, look. Someone's hurt out there."

Thomas didn't even look up from his papers.

"Don't get involved, Leo. We have customers to worry about. Lock the door and finish the side work."

"Something's wrong with him," Leo insisted, his chest tightening. Ignoring his manager's cold glare, Leo pushed through the heavy glass door, stepping directly into the freezing downpour.

He knelt beside the shivering man on the slick, wet concrete. "Sir? Can you hear me?" Leo asked, shielding the man from the worst of the wind.

The man, Marcus, weakly opened his eyes, his voice barely a whisper.

"I'm okay."

"Take some water," Leo said, pulling a clean bottle from his apron pocket and pressing it into Marcus's trembling hands. "Stay with me."

"Get back inside!"
Thomas's harsh voice cut through the storm. The manager stood in the doorway, dry and furious.

Leo protested, "He needs help!"

Thomas snapped back,

"Then you're fired. Get your coat and get out. Not my problem."

Marcus looked up at Leo, a strange, profound gratitude shining through his pain. "When nobody else would..." he whispered. As Thomas slammed the door, Marcus pulled out a cracked smartphone, dialing a number.

"Yeah. I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe."
