A Terrified Girl Hid Under a Diner Booth When Her Stepbrother Walked In
Previously: When a terrified young woman takes refuge under a dusty highway diner table, a kind stranger must stand up to a dangerous man claiming it is just family business.
The Secret in the Diner
Luke’s face darkened, a dangerous flicker of rage passing through his eyes. He reached down, attempting to shove Arthur aside to peer under the table, but the older man stood up with surprising speed and strength. Standing at his full height, Arthur was broad-shouldered and imposing, a veteran of a harder life. He blocked Luke's path entirely, his arms crossed over his chest.
"I suggest you turn around and walk out of my diner," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave. "Before I make you."
Luke laughed, a cold, humorless sound that echoed off the metal walls. He wasn't easily intimidated.
"You don't know what you're getting into, old man," Luke sneered. "That girl is my stepsister. She’s unstable, and she has something that belongs to my family. Her father died last week, and she stole his final will. I'm just trying to take her home where she belongs."
Hearing those words, Lily’s heart sank. She clutched her backpack tighter against her chest. Inside was the true, unmodified will of her late father—the one that Luke and his mother had tried to destroy. They wanted to force her to sign a forged document that would strip her of her inheritance and leave her homeless.
Arthur looked down at Lily, then back at Luke. A spark of recognition flared in the older man's eyes when Luke mentioned Lily's father. Arthur looked at the girl's tear-stained face and saw the striking resemblance to a man he had served with in the military decades ago. He remembered the letters his old friend Thomas had sent him, worrying about his greedy stepfamily.
"Your father was Thomas Vance, wasn't he?" Arthur asked softly, looking down at Lily.
Lily nodded slowly, her eyes wide with shock. Luke took a step back, suddenly realizing that this diner owner was not just a random stranger. The web of secrets was beginning to unravel right there on the dusty floor.
