Luke realized he was losing control of the situation. He reached into his jacket pocket, his posture turning hostile. But before he could make a move, the heavy bell above the diner door rang again. This time, it was the local sheriff, a close friend of Arthur’s who stopped by every afternoon for lunch. Luke froze, slowly pulling his hand out of his pocket as the officer stepped inside.

"Everything alright here, Arthur?" the sheriff asked, his eyes darting between Luke's tense stance and Arthur's calm demeanor.

"Just resolving a little family business, Sheriff," Arthur replied, keeping his eyes locked on Luke. "This young man was just leaving."

Luke glared at Arthur, realizing he was completely outnumbered and outmatched. With a bitter curse, he turned on his heel and stormed out of the diner, the screen door slamming shut behind him. A moment later, the sound of his truck tires screeching echoed down the highway.

Arthur knelt down and offered a hand to Lily, helping her crawl out from under the table. She was still shaking, but the terror in her eyes had been replaced by profound relief. She looked at Arthur, tears of gratitude streaming down her face.

"Thank you," she whispered. "He would have forced me to sign it. I had nowhere else to run."

Arthur smiled warmly, pouring her a fresh glass of water. He explained that her father, Thomas, had often spoken of his daughter with immense pride, and had even mentioned Arthur in his old letters. Arthur promised Lily that he would help her find a lawyer to ensure her father's true wishes were honored.
