Previously: When a terrified young woman hides beneath a diner booth, a weathered stranger must make a split-second decision to protect her from a dangerous man claiming she is family.

Unearthing the Truth

Chris’s face contorted with rage, his jaw clenching as he stared down at Tom. He wasn’t used to being defied, especially not by a stranger in a rundown diner. "You don't know who you're messing with, old man," Chris hissed, his hand reaching toward his waistband. "That girl is my sister-in-law, and she stole something that belongs to my family. Step aside, or you’ll regret it."

Tom didn't move an inch. Instead, his grip on his coffee mug tightened slightly, his posture remaining as solid as a mountain.

"I've met men like you before,"
Tom said quietly, his voice devoid of fear.
"You talk about family, but all you care about is control. If she ran from you, she had a damn good reason."

Underneath the table, Lily listened to the exchange, her mind racing. Chris was right about one thing—she had taken something. Stuffed inside the pocket of her oversized hoodie was a flash drive containing evidence of the systematic fraud and abuse Chris’s family empire had committed against local workers. Her sister had died trying to expose them, and now Lily was their last loose end. Chris had hunted her across three counties, and she was exhausted.

Chris took a step forward, his shadow engulfing the booth. "This is your last warning," he threatened, leaning over the table. "Give her up, or I’ll tear this place apart."

Just then, the bell above the door chimed again. But it wasn't another customer. Two local sheriff's deputies walked in, lured by the sight of Chris’s illegally parked vehicle outside. Tom caught their reflection in the dark window pane. He looked back at Chris and smiled grimly.

"You were saying?"
Tom asked, raising an eyebrow. Chris stiffened, realizing his window of opportunity was rapidly closing, but the malice in his eyes promised that this was far from over.
