Seeing the deputies, Chris smoothly stepped back, plastering a fake, polite smile on his face. He nodded at Tom, a silent threat lingering in his eyes, before turning on his heel and walking out of the diner. The heavy glass door swung shut, and a moment later, the roar of his engine faded into the distance. Only then did Lily finally let out the breath she had been holding, her body collapsing in a wave of relief as she crawled out from beneath the dusty wooden table.

Tom looked down at her, his expression softening. He pulled out a clean napkin and handed it to her to wipe the dirt and tears from her face.

"You're safe now, kiddo,"

he said gently. Lily looked at this stranger, overwhelmed by his bravery. "Why did you help me?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "You don't even know me. He could have hurt you."

Tom let out a soft sigh, looking out the window at the dark highway.

"Years ago, I had a daughter who needed someone to stand up for her,"

he confessed, a deep sadness in his eyes.

"I wasn't there when she needed me most. I promised myself if I ever got a second chance to protect someone, I wouldn't hesitate. Today, you gave me that chance."

Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out the flash drive, placing it on the table. With Tom’s encouragement and the protection of the deputies still standing by the counter, Lily finally handed over the evidence that would bring Chris and his family to justice. Tom stayed by her side through the entire process, refusing to let her walk alone.
