A Terrified Mother Hides From the Police to Save Her Little Daughter
The Shadows in the Rain
The cold, relentless rain beat down on the rusted metal of the auto salvage yard, creating a deafening drumbeat that drowned out the sound of Sarah’s ragged breathing. She huddled in the narrow, muddy gap behind a crushed navy blue chassis, her back pressed against the cold iron. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. With her left hand, she gently but firmly covered the mouth of her six-year-old daughter, Zoe. Zoe’s bright red hooded jacket was a dangerous splash of color in the monochrome darkness, and Sarah tucked her deeper into her chest, praying the shadows would swallow them whole.
A stinging sensation on her forehead reminded her of the escape. A trickle of blood, diluted by the rain, ran down her temple and into her eye, but she didn't dare move to wipe it away. Just yards away, the sharp, white beams of heavy-duty flashlights swept across the graveyard of dead cars, cutting through the downpour like searchlights in a prison yard. The heavy footsteps of combat boots splashed through the deep puddles.
“We have to find her before it is too late,”
a gruff voice called out. It belonged to Officer Davis, a man Sarah had known for years. He was her husband’s closest friend on the force. But tonight, Davis wasn't here to protect her. He was hunting her. Sarah squeezed her eyes shut as a flashlight beam swept directly over the rusted metal above their heads, missing them by mere inches. She knew that if they were found tonight, she and Zoe would disappear forever, and the truth would be buried under the rusted steel of the junkyard.
