The winter wind bit sharply through Chloe’s black jacket, but the cold inside her chest was far worse. Standing on the snow-covered steps of her college’s old brick library, the nineteen-year-old clutched her backpack straps like a shield. Under her bright orange beanie, her mind raced with a thousand doubts. She was about to make a decision that would either save her or ruin her life. Behind her, Professor Thomas, the only faculty member who knew her plight, offered a reassuring nod. "You'll be fine. Breathe, kiddo," he murmured softly.

A Terrifying Arrival

Chloe took a deep breath, the icy air burning her lungs. Just then, the distant rumble of heavy engines vibrated through the pavement. The low growl quickly escalated into a deafening roar as a fleet of sleek, dark motorcycles rounded the campus corner. Students scattered, whispering in hushed, intimidated tones as the leather-clad riders claimed the quiet college avenue. At the front of the pack rode Marcus, a rugged man of forty-two with a stern jawline, wearing a dark leather jacket and dark sunglasses that masked his eyes.

The bikes screeched to a halt, kicking up a light spray of slush. Marcus kicked his kickstand down and pushed his sunglasses down his nose, his sharp eyes locking onto Chloe’s anxious face. The silence between them was heavy, filled only with the white puffs of their breath in the freezing air.

"Hey there. Looking for a ride?" Marcus asked, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that carried an unexpected warmth.

Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked at the formidable group of riders behind him, then back at the man who held the key to her past. Swallowing her fear, she took a step forward. "I... guess I am," she replied, her voice trembling but resolute. She had no idea that this ride would take her directly into the heart of a secret her mother had died trying to protect.
