The Sealed Farewell

The air inside the quiet American living room was thick with the scent of lilies and artificial sorrow. Dust motes danced in the slivers of harsh afternoon light piercing through the tightly closed blinds. It was arranged for a home wake, yet the atmosphere felt less like a place of mourning and more like a waiting room for a disaster. Standing by the closed, dark wood casket was Maria. Dressed in a dark navy-black knitted dress, her blonde hair falling in soft, perfect waves, she looked the part of the grieving widow. But her hands, tightly clasped in front of her, were trembling with an intensity that had nothing to do with grief.

Suddenly, the heavy front doors burst open. Leo, her stepson, stumbled into the room. His charcoal wool suit was disheveled, his eyes red and wild with disbelief. "Dad! Dad!" he cried out, his voice cracking under the weight of sudden devastation. He rushed toward the casket, but before he could reach it, he collapsed onto the heavy mahogany lid, sobbing uncontrollably. "When did all this happen, Maria?" Leo gasped, looking up at her with pleading eyes. "I want to see my father one last time. Please, open it."

Maria’s face paled, and she instantly gripped Leo’s shoulders, pulling him back with frantic strength.

"No, you can't! It can't be opened,"
she whispered, her voice a sharp, desperate hiss.
"Your father had a disease. A very contagious disease. The medical examiner said we had to keep it sealed for everyone's safety."

But beneath the heavy wood and velvet lining, in the absolute pitch black, Arthur was wide awake. His wrists were bound, and a thick strip of grey duct tape was sealed over his mouth. Hearing his son’s muffled cries from just inches away, Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. Tears of sheer terror leaked from his eyes as he tried to scream, but only a low, desperate vibration escaped his throat. He was buried alive in his own living room, and his wife was standing guard over his living tomb.
