Leo stared at his stepmother, his grief momentarily suspended by a cold wave of suspicion. His father, Arthur, had been a robust and healthy man just forty-eight hours ago. There had been no mention of any chronic illness, let alone a highly contagious disease that required a sudden, closed-casket home wake without a proper funeral home director present. "A contagious disease?" Leo repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Since when? Why wasn't I called to the hospital, Maria? Why did I only get a text saying he was gone?"

Maria smoothed down her navy dress, trying to regain her composure, though her eyes darted nervously toward the front door.

"It was sudden, Leo. The doctors said it was a rare, aggressive strain. I didn't want to worry you until we knew for sure, but by then... it was too late. Please, we need to let him rest. The transport team will be here soon to take him to the crematorium."
