The Parlor of Shadows

The Oakridge Heritage Orphanage foyer smelled of dust and old wood polish, a scent that clung to every visitor like a warning. Madame Vane stood in her plum pinstripe suit, gold spectacles catching the amber light of the wall sconces, her thin lips pressed into a smile that never reached her eyes.

Beside her, a wealthy couple in fur coats shifted their weight, eyeing the children lined up like merchandise. Lucas knew this routine. He'd been passed over a dozen times, his leg brace drawing pitying glances that quickly turned away.

Tonight, though, the director's patience had run out.

"Get out of this parlor," she hissed, grabbing Lucas's shoulder and shoving him toward the cellar door. The other children flinched, but no one dared speak.

Lucas stumbled, his brace catching on the rug. He fell to one knee, the pain shooting up his leg like fire. He clutched his inner wrist, a nervous habit, and whispered, "Please don't hit my leg."

Madame Vane's eyes narrowed. "You're a waste of space, boy. Don't you dare embarrass me in front of these donors."

But she didn't see the couple at the door. Christian and Hannah Vale had frozen in the doorway, their security guards looming behind them like silent statues.

Christian's face had gone pale. He took a step forward, then another, his polished shoes echoing on the marble floor.

"What did you just say?" he asked, his voice dangerously low.

Madame Vane spun around, her composure cracking. "Mr. Vale! I didn't see you there. This is just a discipline issue—"

But Christian wasn't listening. He pushed past her, dropping to his knees beside Lucas. Hannah followed, her trembling fingers reaching out to touch the boy's cheek.

"Kneel down beside me, darling," she whispered, her voice breaking.

Lucas looked up at her, his eyes wide with confusion. "Are you going to hurt me too?"

Christian's jaw tightened. "No, son. Never."

He gently took Lucas's wrist, turning it over. The birthmark—a winged lion, perfectly formed—stood out against the pale skin. Christian gasped, tears streaming down his face.

"Hannah," he choked out, fumbling for his gold locket. He opened it, revealing a photo of a nursery and a tiny infant with a blurred wrist. But beside the photo, engraved in the gold, was the exact same winged lion crest.

"He's our stolen little boy," Christian whispered.

Madame Vane staggered backward, her face ashen. "That's impossible. I have papers—"

"You have nothing," Christian said, his voice rising. "We've been searching for six years. Six years, and you had him hidden here, in plain sight."

Hannah pulled Lucas into her arms, wrapping him in her cashmere coat. The boy flinched at first, then slowly, hesitantly, he leaned into her warmth.

"Nobody will hurt you again," Christian promised, his voice steady.

Behind them, the guards stepped forward, taking Madame Vane by the arms. She screamed, thrashing, but they didn't relent.

"You'll never prove it!" she shrieked.

Christian looked at her, his eyes cold as winter. "We already have."
